We are proud of our breeding program and have nothing to hide at Tim-Be Shar-Pei. While we hope that all our dogs die from old age, it is unfortunate that some die from accidents or tragic diseases. Trying to avoid the unpleasantries of discovering the true cause of death will do nothing to help the Chinese Shar-Pei overcome some of the health issues (amyloidosis, chronic kidney disease, cancer, etc.) it faces in successive generations.
As breeders, we feel it is our responsibility not to point fingers at the breeding programs of others, especially in the matters of health. All we can do is study pedigrees and make informed decisions on planned breedings as we possibly can. It does the Chinese Shar-Pei absolutely no good to red flag a particular dog or bitch and all its progeny and descendents for all generations because it died of a tragic illness. Unless specific tests are developed that can be used effectively to identify potential health problems, we cannot definitively eliminate entire pedigrees from our breeding program. Again, informed breeding decisions with the best intention for the future of the Chinese Shar-Pei is what we and all reputable breeders try to make.
